After the recent arrival of a brand new Macbook Pro in my life. I decided document the 10 Applications that i use on a regular basis and i don’t think i could do without whether that be for work or play. This list isn’t completely honest as i haven’t included iTunes, Photoshop, Illustrator, Quark, Mail, Safari, etc… because i see these applications as standard for me and i wanted to share some of the smaller applications how i work with them.

Coda

Coda

Made by Panic | Cost: $99.00

In my opinion, the best advanced text editor out there. I use this application more or less every single day and i have nothing bad to say about it. It has everything that i need and more. Perfect. Designers and developers all have their own preferences when it comes to development tools and this is definitely mine and always will be.

Transmit

Transmit

Made by Panic | Cost: $34.00

Another awesome application from Panic. There aren’t that many FTP applications for the Mac, and from what i’ve seen/heard, Transmit is the one of choice for the majority. With the recent update to v.4 it has become even better than before.

Candybar

Candybar

Made by Panic | Cost: $29.00

This is an application that i use for my obsession with Icons and theming of my Mac. I can’t have the standard icons for some applications in my dock, so Candybar fixed this for me. Creating an iTunes-esque style library for my icon collection and allowing for easy icon replacing. Another Panic gem.

Twitterrific

Twitterrific

Made by The Iconfactory | Cost: Free (With Adverts) / $14.95

There are so many Twitter applications out and about and I’ve used quite a few of them but then always returned to Twitterrific. Perfect interface, more than enough functionality to use, and never ever fails. It fits perfectly on my desktop and doesn’t take up too much screen real estate unlike some of the others out there. Thank you Iconfactory for an amazing application.

Alarm Clock

Alarm Clock

Made by Robbie Hanson | Cost: Free

This app is an absolute lifesaver. If i didn’t have Alarm Clock on my mac i would be lost. I use this every single morning to wake me up with a shuffled song from my iTunes library. My iPhone helps aswell, but this application is just in case that fails and vice-versa.

The Hit List

The Hit List

Made by Potion Factory | Cost: BETA (free) / $49.95 (Pre-Order)

Another app that i depend on more or less everyday. The Hit List is the perfect to-do list and workload organiser for me. It’s so simple to use and organise, but also has a lot of advanced filtering options to allow for a complete streamlined approach to your workflow. I’ve not used this application for long, but i’ve already become dependant on it for my day to day tasks. Definitely worth checking out at the moment because it’s free whilst still in BETA.

Newsfire

Newsfire

Made by David Watanabe | Cost: Free

Out of all the RSS reader apps available for mac, Newsfire, is by far my favourite. It’s simple, clean and got a lovely interface. Does exactly what it says on the tin and works perfectly. It’s not the most advanced RSS reader, but it’s exactly what i want.

Rucksack

Rucksack

Made by Creativebe | Cost: $19.00

A relatively new application for me, i’ve only known about it for about a month or so but it’s already become one of my necessities. Rucksack offers quick and powerful unzipping, unraring, etc… of files with a really tasty interface and quality icon. There is the obvious native application with the mac and then a couple of expensive alternatives but the downsides of these are that they are restricted to certain filetypes when Rucksack handles all of them with no problems.

Dropbox

Dropbox

Made by Dropbox | Cost: Free (2Gb)

Not strictly a ‘Mac App’ but Dropbox is something that i don’t think i could do without. Dropbox installs a folder on your mac that syncs with the same folder that you have installed on another computer. I use this for when i do work from home for the office. There is an online interface aswell to allow for access anywhere in the world and you can also share folders with other users for easy file sharing.

Fontcase

Fontcase

Made by Bohemian Coding | Cost: $56.00

Everything on my mac has to be organised as best it can be. This includes music, files, icons and fonts. The standard application, Font Book that comes packaged with OSX, is fine to a certain extent but isn’t very intuitive when it comes to organisation. This is where Fontcase steps in. Beautiful looking interface and works so well. Perfect for all people using fonts on a regular basis.

Comment up any other applications that you use personally and why so that i can check them out and add to my list :) I hope these help in some way.

Thanks for reading :)

What about Evernote? You gotta love Evernote!

The Hit List does all that though dude, and i use ‘Instapaper’ for saving stuff to read later…

The Hit List are supposed to be releasing their iPhone app soon aswell, so that’ll just make it so much more for me.

Plus i don’t like the interface for Evernote… it seems like it’s trying to hard and too many panels? Well it did last time i used it anyway :)

  3. Ty says:

Stop dissing Evernote you punk! ;-)

Maybe I’ll try this Hit List thing…

  4. Perki says:

You should do… it’s really clean and does exactly what it says on the tin! Perfectly :)
