What i'm reading at the moment

Pretty much everything that i want to read, can be found online now, I don’t do as anywhere near much physical book reading as i should do or as i want to anymore, but recently i have decided to change this. There’s just something nice about sitting quietly and enjoying holding a book instead of looking at a screen or trying to read something on my iPhone.

I know that the iPad has a larger screen and and has this functionality as a pretty big part of its selling point but i still don’t think that it would be as good as holding a book a physically turning the pages (maybe i’m wrong, i don’t own an iPad yet).

I have a subscription to .net magazine aswell and i sometimes find myself with 3 months worth of magazines just sat on my desk (still in the wrapper) waiting to be read. I will then see another magazine or publication that i must have, get it home and then leave it for a month or two. The reason i end up leaving these to gather dust is generally down to my lack of time/other commitments. After realising this and also realising that the book situation has got quite insane, i sorted through quite a few books dotted around my home, and then decided to crack open the ones that i bought on a whim and haven’t ever read.

Here is what i am currently reading:

Handcrafted CSS

Handcrafted CSS (Video Edition)

Details: Dan Cederholm / New Riders / 240 pages | Cost: £39.00

The best web design/development type book that i own due to it’s format and the way it’s written. It’s perfect to use if you’re just starting out learning about CSS and it’s also perfect if you’ve been using CSS for a while and you need a quick reference and explanation about certain elements. I know that more or less everything you need to know about CSS can be found online, but sometimes it’s nice to have a book to hand to flick through whilst working. Plus the way the book has been designed is beautiful.

Beginning Mac Programming

Beginning Mac Programming

Details: Tim Isted / Pragmatic Press / 300 pages | Cost: $34.95

I’ve been trying to learn a programming language for a while now and when i was approached by Tim to help him with some of his illustrations for this book, i jumped at it. This book is very, very easy to get your head around the basic’s of Mac programming by teaching you the applications used in the building process alongside the actual code so that you don’t get in over your head too soon. Beginning Mac Programming is a definite foundation for anyone looking to start out with little or no experience in programming.

Fixed Magazine

FIXED Magazine (Issue 5)

Details: FIXED Magazine | Cost: £5 / DOWNLOAD

To my knowledge, this is the most recent issue of FIXED magazine and it’s amazing. The design, photography, typography, paper… everything has been thoroughly thought about and it’s noticeable. It’s execution is perfect. It’s not really a magazine, it’s a small book with an amazing presentation alongside quality articles that you can read anytime of the day. Definitely worth a read if you’re interested in riding fixed gear bikes.

Books i own

I’m definitely not a fiction book fan at all. I don’t know why this is, maybe because my imagination is already wild enough. I mainly read reference, research, factual and i also went through a phase of biographies and autobiographies, but there are some books that i won’t get rid of. I’ve listed a selection of these below. The books that i own and tend to have a flick through/read on a regularly:

Books to buy…

With all this talk of the books that i currently own, it got me to thinking about the books that i really want. I seem to find myself wanting these books after i’ve more or less skinted myself buying other things and so these get put to the side. Maybe now that i’ve blogged them, and i can see them all the time it will give me the boost i need to go and purchase them :)
