Ingredients:

Cake Tin(s)

4oz Self Raising Flour

4oz Caster Sugar

4oz Butter (Half a regular bar of butter)

2/3 Medium(ish) eggs depending on consistency of mixture

1 Tub of Betty Crocker Buttercream Icing (Vanilla)

1/4 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract

Black Food Colouring (For his hair)

Green Food Colouring (Add more as you see it changing – Look at my photo’s for reference :) )

How to make the cake:

1. Pre-heat your oven to about 220°C (you’re best doing this now so that you’re not faffing around after the cake mixture is done)

2. Take half of the Betty Crocker icing out of the tub and put it in a bowl, start adding the black food colouring into it (add the colouring little by little until you have a very dark grey icing – only use half though, because the other half will need to be kept white for the cake filling.)

3. Put the black icing into the fridge – After you’ve added a fair bit of food colouring to it, the consistency has gone a little bit sloppy, so do this now so that the icing has time to reform some of its consistency.

4. Weigh out the flour, sugar and butter. (4oz of each)

5. Sieve the flour and sugar into the bowl and then throw in butter, add 2 eggs and start mixing (i did this the retro way, with a wooden spoon, none of that electric whisk rubbish).

6. Make sure that the mixture is really smooth, no bubbles at all. If the mixture is too stodgy or thick then add another egg to loosen it up.

7. When you have your mixture perfect, add in the baking powder and vanilla extract.

8. THE FUN PART – Start adding in the green food colouring (little by little) and mixing it in. Make sure you’re not leaving big dark areas while mixing.

9. Shift the green hulky mixture into the cake tins and bang them in the oven for about 20minutes on 200°C

(keep checking them though to make sure they’re rising properly). They should come out looking something like this.

10. Give it a few minutes to cool down before you take them out of the cake tins. Then tip them out onto a plate.

11. Start knifing the the white icing filling onto the top of one of the cakes until you have a sufficient filling amount, and then place the top of the cake onto the filling so that you have your sandwich.

12. Take the black icing out of the fridge (by now it should’ve started to set a little bit) and cover the entire cake until it looks like this.

13. Throw it back in the fridge for a while until the black icing has set.

14. Make a brew and cut that cake

15. Take a picture of it and send it over to me :) imadeahulkcake@planetperki.co.uk.

Cheers everyone, hope you all make one and send them over to me so that i can see what mental creations you bake! :D

So i’ve baked little cup-cake type things, a quad coloured sponge and a HULK cake… Time for something a little bit more exciting… The Manchester Tart!

The home baking continues… this time i stepped my game up and made some Manchester Tarts. They’re probably my second favorite cake/dessert after Egg Custards and honestly… they tasted amazing.

Apart from there being a little tiny bit too much pastry, they were awesome!

I made the pastry and custard from scratch, which i am very proud of and topped it all off with using fresh raspberries instead of the usual cherry on top and some very tasty raspberry jam and coconut to top it all off.

I didn’t realise the mammoth task that i took on when i decided to cook it all from scratch, by having to rest the pastry, then bake it, then make the custard from raw ingredients. Each one taking the best part of 30-45 minutes to prepare and then having to leave for at least an hour before being able to move onto the next part.

Plus custard powder hasn’t got anything on ‘proper’ custard. Even though it takes ages and ages to get it right and keep the consistency right for the tart, its so worth it!

Safe to say unless you’ve got at least a full day to make these bad-boys, then don’t do it. :D

People always say that homemade beats shop bought, and i never realised it properly until these… They were something else!

I should probably start to re-assess my home baking fetish that i have at the moment?! Its even got as far as having a hashtag started because of it! If you’re on Twitter, then you can join in with this activity, now known as #sundaybakingclub or #sundaybakinclub?…

This time we thought that it was best to make some “normal” type cakes, instead of our past attempts at ridiculous colours or comic book hero cakes. So a return to straight forward cupcakes was on the cards.

It was never going to end that way though really, not when i spied chocolate chips in the shop next to the flour! :D

While making the cakes, those chips were always in the back of my mind, which then led to me making my hedgehog cupcakes! :)

These were the best cakes we’ve made so far. Our past cakes have had loads of food colouring in them so they were probably made from 75% E numbers which i’m guessing would alter the taste of the sponge. Not this time…

THE INCREDIBLE SPONGE CAKE!!!

On the back of the ‘C M Y Kake’, we decided to make another cake… It was decided that we would create an Incredible Hulk cake this week. It has turned into a challenge for us to decide what type of cake to make next.

Fortunately, this time, the dye actually worked unlike our previous cakey experiment and we ended up with the perfect green sponge and black icing hair. Plus we also used a very tasty, vanilla buttercream filling between the layers instead of jam.

Cyan Magenta Yellow K? Cake? Black?

I’ve been on a mad spree of making cakes over the past month or so and me and the missus decided to make an ode to design in sponge cake format.

I’ve been on a mad spree of making home made cakes over the past month or so and me and the missus decided to make an ode to design in sponge cake format. A CMYK sponge cake :)

It wasn’t exactly very difficult to make, but it was definitely a lot harder than a straight up sponge cake, the pictures below kind of give that away, but it was properly good fun.

What we did was basically split a normal sponge cake mixture into 4 separate bowls and added Blue, Pink, Yellow and Black food colouring to each one, gave each a quick mix and then put each bowls worth of mixture into a cake tin and baked in the oven, as usual. We then put each layer on cake on top of each other, with a properly big helping of raspberry jam to hold them together and finished it off with a thick dusting of icing sugar…

Here are the results of our CMYK sponge cake experiment.

Lovely :)

It was a shame that the pink dye didn’t actually colour the sponge, and that the blue wasn’t exactly vivid, but as a bit of fun, i think it worked pretty well. Next time i try something like this i will have to remember to use some more dye with the blue and pink.

Oh and by the way, the amount of E numbers in that cake was unbelievable, it wasn’t for anyone a little bit health conscious… but it tasted pretty good.

What kind of cake should i try next? i was tempted by making an ‘Incredible Hulk‘ cake ;)
